Video: HTC EVO 3D Europe

If 3D floats your boat, then the 3D version of the HTC Sensation, the HTC EVO 3D is heading to Europe from next month. In the US, the EVO 3D has been out for just a few days so it is hard to say if it's actually any good or not..

Video: HTC Sensation

A dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a 4.3" 540 x 960 pixel display, an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video recording.. is the HTC Sensation the best Android phone to date? Well.. almost, but bear in mind that it's just a 2D version of the EVO 3D. And it isn't likely to be cheap either!

Handheld 3D is all the rage with a 3D Android phone from LG already announced, a new Nintendo 3DS gaming device and probably a lot more products to come before the end of the year.

The HTC EVO 3D is heading to the US Sprint network in a CDMA / EVDO / LTE form, but there are strong indications that there's a GSM / UMTS / HSPA version in the works too, although it will almost definitely have a different name.

Think of this as a dual-core Desire HD with a 3D QHD display and 3D camera on the back, and you'll get an idea of what the device is like.. actually, take out the 3D and this would still be a very nice Android device!

There's no word on when this might end up in Europe, but HTC will almost definitely want to use the 3D technology that they have developed here in another handset very soon.

Lots of announcements from HTC today.. and they are all Android.

Mobile phone display mega shootout: The full picture

Introduction

There are so many of them that it’s pretty hard to make up your mind. It all boils down to LCD vs. LED although this simple fact is easy to overlook. You can go ahead and blame it all on marketing but that’s one thing that just can’t be black and white. Instead of keeping it simple, manufacturers are busy making up catchy names.

Had enough with LCD? Be our guest, try Super LCD. There’s even Super Clear LCD for the sake of being different. Same with AMOLED. There’s the garden variety. But there’s also Clear Black and Super AMOLED.

Anyway, with so many screens around even we got mixed up. And instead of writing down “We’ll never again mistake regular LCD for Super LCD” three thousand times, we got assigned to do this article. Yes sir. Coming up, boss. It’s about LCD and AMOLED, about Super AMOLED and SUPER LCD. It’s about the Retina display, which technically is a type of LCD.

Display shootout

This is not a story going back to monochrome displays and the dawn of STN and CSTN screens. That would’ve made an even bigger mess. Instead, we’re focusing on present day touchscreen and the varieties it comes in. We have each technology represented and it’s quite a bunch of highly popular and fairly recent phones being judged by the quality of their screen. From the good old LCD to the ClearBlack AMOLED by Nokia – they are all here, with all their strengths and weaknesses.

And here are the contenders, along with the display technology they stand for. In the LCD corner, the HTC Desire HD and LG Optimus 7 are next to the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10.

The Samsung S8530 Wave II is on the enhanced LCD team – technically, it’s Super Clear LCD, the brand name Samsung use to market their own SLCD-based screens. The Retina display is not just another LCD screen either – like the Apple iPhone 4 is not just another phone.

The Nokia N8 is running for AMOLED, while the C6-01 has Nokia’s ClearBlack technology behind it. Finally, we have a couple of Super AMOLED screens – on the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S and Samsung S8500 Wave.

An elite club it is and that goes to show how important screens are. Manufacturers can’t go on for ever offering more and more features, so things like screen quality are becoming a key selling point.

Video: HTC Gratia

The HTC Legend is a great looking phone, but really expensive for what it is. Perhaps this new Gratia (Grai-shya? How the heck do you pronounce it anyway?) is going to be a bit cheaper.

Video: HTC Desire Z (2)

This is HTC's video exploring the new Desire Z and its features. Looks good!

Video: HTC Desire Z

You might recognise the HTC Desire Z as the T-Mobile G2, or perhaps from its apparent codename of HTC Vision. A but like the Desire HD, this is really just HTC stretching the Desire sub-brand to other high-end devices.

Like the G2, this has HSPA+ support and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard running on top of Android 2.2, and it competes strongly with the Motorola Milestone 2.

Video: HTC Desire HD

Well, it's finally official.. the HTC Desire HD is the Android equivalent of the HTC HD2. The screen has been increased to 4.3", the processor and RAM has been upgraded and the HD supports HSPA+.. but don't expect it to replace the original Desire any time soon because it's a substantially bigger and more expensive device.

T-Mobile G2.. no, it's *another* G2.

Confusingly, there are two phones with the name T-Mobile G2, one is the T-Mobile G2 Touch which is a version of the HTC Hero launced last year. This new one is just called the T-Mobile G2 and is T-Mobile's version of a new upcoming phone codenamed HTC Vision, initially heading for T-Mobile USA.

This is a QWERTY slider running Android 2.2 on an 800 MHz Snapdragon MSM7230 processor (allegedly faster than the 1GHz CPU found in rivals). There's a 3.7" display on the front, a 5 megapixel camera with HD video recording capabilities on the back and a very nice looking keyboard, but the G2's key selling proposition is the inclusion of HSPA+ data.

HSPA+ gives a theoretical maximum download speed of up to 21 Mbps, but real world figure will be two-thirds of that or much less. And of course you'll need access to an HSPA+ network, which is still being rolled out by T-Mobile USA.

T-Mobile are pushing HSPA+ as a 4G technology, it is just an enhancement to 3.5G technologies and is probably best described at a 3.75G technology.. 4G isn't here yet and for most customers it won't be for some time.

The G2 should be available to T-Mobile USA customers sometime this month, but we would expect to see it available worldwide under the HTC name by the end of this year.

HTC Vision Rumours

A blurry screenshot of something nice.. the HTC Vision is said to be an Android phone with a practical looking slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 1GHz processor, Android 2.1 and a 3.7" display.

At the moment HTC have nothing that competes directly against the Motorola Milestone or DROID which has a pretty miserable keyboard and a slower processor. Think of this as a Desire with a decent keyboard.. and I certainly know I want one at any rate..

Video: HTC Wildfire

More information on the new Wildfire in this overview from Mobile Gazette:

HTC Wildfire

The HTC Wildfire is the cheaper companion to the HTC Desire.. packing all of the desirable software features like HTC Sense and Friend Stream into a more affordable package.

No exact specs at present, the main headlines are a 3.2" display, 5 megapixel camera.

It looks nice, but doesn't the HTC Legend also have a similar specification? We'll wait for the full details from HTC, in the meantime Tracy and Matt have some more information here.

HTC seeks iPhone ban

HTC has weighed into an increasingly complex series of lawsuits surrounding Apple, according to the BBC with a request filed in the US that Apple touchscreen products be banned.

HTC are arguing that Apple infringes 5 of its patents, and it's worth remembering that HTC have been in the smartphone business for a very long time. Apple also have a counterclaim that HTC has infringed on its patents as well.

Nokia are also involved in lawsuits with Apple, but then Apple is certainly no stranger to lawsuits.

Incidentally, HTC have a pretty cool video reminding people of their history in this market.
